Canon EOS M6 Mark II : Complete review

The Canon Eos M6 Mark II is the Canon’s latest mirrorless camera.

It is an enthusiast-targeted 32.5MP APS-C size sensor, whose building is around the company’s EF-M mount.

It is the highest resolution camera in its class.

In many respects, it is a more compact mirrorless variant of the EOS 90D DSLR

Physically, the Canon EOS M6 Mark II closely resembles the original M6 but brings a host of speed and feature upgrades.

M6 II has a higher resolution sensor, the ability to capture 4K video, and a mode that shoots bursts of raw files at up to 30 fps.

It appeals to enthusiasts as well as snapshot-loving beginners for its easy to understand the menu and helpful modes designed to take the confusion out of basic photographic operations.

Its compact size is a bonus for anyone who wants to travel light.

The M6 II stands out from the previous M6 for a lighter weight, an easier to handle body, and a longer battery life.

Construction features of the Canon EOS M6 Mark II

Canon Eos M6 mark II is solidly built and available in black or silver colors.

It measures a compact 4.71 x 2.76 x 1.94 inches (without the removable electronic viewfinder). With the battery pack and SD memory card, the camera weighs about 14.39 ounces.

Even with the Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM kit lens, the combination remains compact, especially when the lens is retracted.

The M6 II is well built and grabbing it on hand gives a pleasant feeling.

A deep grip provides a solid handhold with a comfortable fit. The slightly angled shutter button, which is surrounded by the main dial, is perfectly positioned for a forefinger, making it convenient to quickly grab a shot.

The feeling of grabbing Canon Eos M6 mark II is that of grabbing a decent camera in terms of construction.

The Canon EOS M6 II’s 3-inch touchscreen is highly responsive and its touch function can be disabled or set to one of two levels of sensitivity.

In addition to touch autofocus and shutter release, the touchscreen also navigates menus and change settings.

Photos quality and shooting experience

M6 II's touch operation has the ability to choose the focus point while using the optional electronic viewfinder (EVF).

Ideally, with the 32.5 MP, this little camera is fast, shooting up to 14fps with auto exposure and autofocus.

Its RAW burst mode pushes the camera to shoot up to 30fps.

With dual pixel AF, autofocus performance is quite good. In lower light, the focus tends to lock in quickly, especially for single-point AF. Face detection and eye AF are generally fast and accurate.

The image quality is quite good. Straight out of the camera, JPEGs are usable with little to no processing but also capture images in RAW format.

The Canon EOS M6 Mark II exhibits a good dynamic range with good maintenance of details in shadow.

The image definition is truly remarkable, the color range is good, the low light performance is more than good, thanks to the absence of the low-pass filter on the sensor.

Low light/high ISO shots are cleaner than one would expect given the sensor’s high resolution.

Its menu system is excellent. It is logically arranged and easy to navigate so even beginners are able to explore the camera’s various settings and shooting options.

Connecting to a smartphone via the Canon Camera Connection app (Android and iOS) is seamless. This allows transferring images, videos, and operating the camera remotely.

The camera’s video features are standard but more than sufficient for most casual recording.

It offers full HD (1920 x 1080 at 60p and 30p), HD (1280 X 720 AT 60p) along with HDR movies and 4K and Full HD time-lapse movies. There is also a 120 slow-motion option and a microphone jack.

The 4K footage is subsampled and has fewer details than rivals that oversample their footage. This allows the M6 II to produce footage with very little rolling shutter distortion.

Cautiously, the EOS M6 Mark II does not yet shoot 4K at the popular 24fps frame rate or 60/50p. There is no in-body stabilization, but it is well it's light and wieldy on a gimbal.

It can shoot at a high frame rate in 1080p resolution, but not with continuous autofocus.

The EOS M6 II uses the LP-E17 battery that manages to squeeze a rating of 305 shots per charge

Prices and kits for sale

The EOS M6 Mark II is available in a series of kits.

The official body-only price is $849. Adding the retracting 15-45mm IS STM lens and EVF boosts the price to $1099, while an 18-150mm IS STM and EVF kit sets back to $1349.

An M-mount adapter is available for $200, which allows you to use Canon’s EF and EF-S lenses.

At higher budgets, the EVF is bundled with the M6 Mark III EF-M 15-45mm IS STM kit thas costs $1,099 and the EF-M 18-150mm IS STM kit for $1,349.

One has to budget an extra $200 for the EVF-DC2 if he buys the $850 body-only version.

My opinion on the Canon EOS M6 Mark II

The Canon EOS M6 II is a more overtly photographer-targeted camera than its predecessor is.

Gaining Dial Func control, a dedicated MF/AF switch, and an AF-On button combine to put a little more control directly at fingertips.

It ends up giving a good degree of direct control without the sense that a person needs to completely configure the camera.

The Canon EOS M6 Mark II is an appealing camera thanks to its image quality and high-speed performance.

However, it has some stiff competition in this mid-range category of mirrorless cameras

Naturally, the Canon M6 II tops the list when it comes to sensor resolution

Other than the optional EVF issue, most people will be more than happy with this little camera.
