The Sony A6600 is Sony's latest and greatest offering in its popular A6000-series APS-C mirrorless cameras.
Its 24.2MP sensor and BIONZ X image processor are nothing particularly special but have an improvement in autofocus and subject tracking capabilities.
Sony Alpha A6600 targets squarely at video and vlogging. It boasts 4K HDR capture with no restriction on recording length.
In addition, it exhibits an integrated microphone socket for enhanced audio clarity, plus a built-in headphone input for sound monitoring.
The compact profile incorporates a high-resolution XGA Tru-Finder 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder for bright, clear, eye-level viewing, and this EVF features a 120-fps viewing mode for smooth tracking of fast-moving subjects.
A rear 3.0" 921.6k-dot touchscreen LCD monitor is also available and has a tilting design to benefit shooting from high and low working angles, and the touchscreen design allows for intuitive touch-to-focus control.
The Sony Alpha A6600 has a pretty steep price that stands at US$ 1.398 but with adorable features that justifies the value for money.
The camera has a weather-sealed magnesium alloy body that conceals in-body sensor-shift image stabilization and a high-capacity battery.
Its body is dust and moisture-resistant to permit working in harsh environments.
Boasting a weatherproof design, it has Sony’s step-up NP-FZ1000 battery, which effectively doubles battery life to about 720 shots.
The Sony Alpha A6600 boasts a larger grip than its siblings do. This makes the camera feel comfortable and secure in larger hands, and there is still just about enough room between the grip and a typical lens to prevent it from cramping.
The A6600 has a three-inch touchscreen LCD that tilts up to 180° degrees to face forward. It is a useful feature for vloggers, as are the microphone and headphone ports.
For video, both headphones and microphone ports feature to improve audio control.
Additionally, for wireless remote control over the camera, or for just sharing imagery online, built-in Wi-Fi with NFC permits linking with a mobile device for intuitive wireless control.
Sony A6600 weighs 503g and has external dimensions of 120 x 67 x 69 mm (4.72 x 2.64 x 2.72 inches). Considering that the average weight of mirrorless type cameras is 428g, its weight is about average in its class.
It has a tilting 3 LCD screen with a resolution of 922k dots. Both the screen size and the screen resolution is up to the standards of this class.
LCD is a Touch screen type, so one can change the settings and set the focus point with fingertips.
The camera makes life easy for those who love shooting self-portraits or group photos because it has a selfie-friendly screen.
A revised APS-C-format 24.2MP Exmor CMOS sensor realizes smooth, nuanced image quality with minimal noise and high sensitivity from ISO 100-32000.
The sensitivity is expandable to ISO 102400 for working in low-light conditions.
Besides, the sensor and BIONZ X processor combination also avail a top continuous shooting rate of 11 fps with AF and AE.
Its sensor permits 16-bit recording with 14-bit raw file output for a wider tonal and color scale.
Sony A6600 can shoot continuously at a max speed of 11.0 fps and has a max shutter speed of 1/4000 sec.
Advantageously, it has a powerful battery that provides a shooting life of 810. Considering that the average battery life of Mirrorless type cameras is 364 shots, Sony A6600 has a good battery life for its class.
The camera provides an internal recording of UHD 4K movies is possible in multiple frame rates up to 30 fps and, based on the Super35mm recording area and effective 6K resolution.
Full-frame 4K recording has improvement that allows for finer quality when working at mid to high sensitivities to permit full use of the entire sensor width.
It supports full HD 1080p recording in frame rates up to 120 fps, and both resolutions utilize the 100 Mbps XAVC S format within an MP4 wrapper with 4:2:0 sampling.
The high-speed, 120 fps recording enables 4x and 5x slow-motion movie recording with the frame rate set to either 30p or 24p. The camera has no recording time limit, allowing for extended clip lengths.
Equally, the 4K video recording also avails the ability to produce 8MP stills during playback by taking a frame grab from a movie and storing it as a separate file.
An ergonomic grip structure is ideal for long shooting sessions and facilitates easy access to the main control buttons and dials.
Also, built-in Wi-Fi enables the A6600 to instantly share imagery to mobile devices for direct sharing online to social networking, via email, and to cloud storage sites.
The Sony Alpha A6600 takes Sony’s E-mount lenses and the price for the body only is available at US$1,398.
Sony A6600 kit is also available with a 16-55mm f/2.8 lens at US $188.99more.
For higher budgets, one would consider Sony's E 70-350mm f/4.56.3 G OSS super-telephoto zoom lens at US$1,000 or £830 that has longer focal lengths, to expand the range of action.
The Sony a6600 looks an excellent camera for video and vlogging, and its stunning AF, in-body image stabilization, and large battery make it suitable for demanding stills photography.
However, it’s still image quality is good rather than class-leading, which is a significant shortcoming given the A6600 is up against some terrific and more keenly-priced rival cameras.
While its video performance is broadly good, it’s marred by pronounced rolling shutter effect and pretty ordinary video specifications by today's standards.
It boasts for the high-capacity battery, which though is seemingly a mundane feature, addresses the battery life shortcomings that plague the vast majority of mirrorless cameras.
Moreover, the plus points continue with the addition of sensor-shift in-body image stabilization, along with the high-quality weather-sealed magnesium alloy body with both features befitting a high end and enthusiast's camera.
The A6600's touchscreen operation compensates to a degree, but it is no substitute for the ergonomics of direct-access buttons.
Overall, the camera delivers respectable still image quality in isolation.
Given the current cost that is less than that of its key rivals, the a6600 stands to be a better option due to its battery life, IBIS, or video-centric features.
